Storage Changes

What's happening?

Previously, Google offered unlimited Google Drive storage to universities using Google Workspace. However, unlimited storage is no longer available. At RIT, we're transitioning to new storage quotas to ensure Google Drive can continue supporting your academic and RIT business needs.

What's changing for me?

  • New storage quota: All RIT student, faculty, and staff accounts will receive a 250GB quota beginning February 29th, 2024.
  • Users currently using more than 250GB: Don't worry, your existing storage won't be automatically deleted. We'll be granting you a slightly larger quota based on your current usage.
  • Need more storage? If you anticipate needing more than your allocated quota, you can request additional storage using this form.

A Few Reminders:

  • Shared Resources: Our Google storage is a community resource shared across RIT; please use it responsibly for your RIT-related work. Your RIT Google Drive should not be used to store personal files or backups. By using Google Drive responsibly, we can collectively make the most of our available storage and avoid potential issues down the line.
  • Keep It Tidy: To help keep our shared space efficient, we encourage you to periodically clean out old or unneeded files. Employees should review the RIT records management policy.
  • Storage Usage: To view how much storage you are using, visit: https://one.google.com/storage.

Future Usage:

We're committed to providing enough storage for everyone's academic and RIT business needs. However, as usage patterns evolve, we may need to adjust quotas in the future to ensure everyone has fair access.

What about Microsoft Office365/OneDrive?

Microsoft recently announced similar changes to their storage policies. RIT is currently reviewing these changes, and more information will be coming soon.
